A night of horror struck the Avellino prison, where a 24-year-old inmate was the victim of an unheard-of and ferocious attack.

In a crescendo of unprecedented violence, his attackers mutilated him, cutting off his ear with an improvised weapon, and fractured his arm, in addition to inflicting wounds to his head. His conditions are desperate and he is hospitalized in the intensive care unit, fighting between life and death.

The episode, which is unbelievable, has deeply shaken the prison community and public opinion. A premeditated and brutal action, which saw a group of prisoners band together to carry out a brutal revenge.

To reach their victim, they showed ruthless determination, kidnapping and attacking two prison police officers, stealing the keys that allowed access to the section.

The attack, which took place yesterday evening, revealed a situation of serious tension within the prison, where internal dynamics seem to escape control.

 Consipe asks for strong intervention from the Government

On the serious incidents that are occurring at the Avellino Bellizzi prison, unfortunately the order of the day: assaults, riots, fights, discovery of illicit substances and materials, "a decisive and concrete intervention by the Government is urgently needed".

CON.SI.PE vice-president Luigi Castaldo and CON.SI.PE national delegate for Penitentiary Police managers Vincenzo Santoriello say this in unison.

They then add: "For some time we have been reporting the organizational criticalities in which the Avellino Bellizzi prison finds itself, now the time has come to give a strong signal of a change of direction, it is urgent to restore order and security before some irreversible critical event, all troublemaking, rebellious and instigating prisoners must be removed from the Irpinia penitentiary outside the region".
