A serious accident occurred late yesterday morning on Via Acacia, where a 30-year-old man driving a Mini Countryman struck a 79-year-old man while crossing the street. The driver, found to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs, fled immediately after the impact but was quickly identified and apprehended by the Carabinieri.
The soldiers of the Castel Volturno Tenancy, who immediately intervened on the scene of the accident together with the 118 health personnel, rescued the victim, who was transported to the Pineta Grande clinic. The elderly man was hospitalized with a reserved prognosis, but fortunately his life is not in danger.
Immediately after the accident, law enforcement began an investigation to identify the perpetrator. Thanks to images from nearby surveillance cameras, the Carabinieri of the Operations and Radiomobile Unit of the Mondragone Territorial Unit, who intervened to assist, were able to reconstruct the accident's dynamics and identify the driver.
The search continued unabated and, with the help of other patrols active in the area, the officers managed to intercept and apprehend the fugitive, still driving the vehicle, on a side street in the town. Taken to the Pineta Grande clinic for routine medical checks, the 30-year-old tested positive for both alcohol and narcotics.
He was subsequently taken to the police station, where he was charged and released pending the judicial authorities' decision. He will face charges of failure to render aid, causing personal injury, hit-and-run, and driving while intoxicated and under the influence of drugs. The car involved in the accident was seized, while the man's valid license was confiscated and sent to the Territorial Government Office in Caserta for further action.
