Naples. A serious water leak, located near Gate 3, necessitated the water supply interruption to the entire Poggioreale cemetery, creating an emergency situation that forced authorities to order its immediate closure.

Images of dry fountains and water-damaged tombs have been circulating on social media, sparking deep dismay and concern among the population.

Workers are already hard at work repairing the damaged pipes and restoring safety, but the reopening date remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the New Cemetery has been opened to receive the urns and remains, but the atmosphere is inevitably different.

It is hoped that the recovery operations will be concluded quickly and that the cemetery may soon reopen its gates, returning to the city an important piece of its historical and cultural heritage.

The note from the municipality

The extremely urgent note from the technicians reads: Please be advised that, starting from 09/10/2024 and until further notice, the Monumental Cemetery will not be accessible as a large water leak has been detected near gate 3.

This unexpected event will require repairs to the supply pipes and the resulting water supply disruption for the entire Monumental Cemetery, with the foreseeable health and safety repercussions that such an interruption entails. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the aforementioned cemetery has been closed.
