Shocking execution in Santiago – Edson Olivares Días, 25, better known as “Bombazul,” one of the leaders of “Los de Abajo,” the organized fan base of the Universidad de Chile soccer team, was murdered yesterday in the municipality of La Pintana, an area of about 200.000 inhabitants in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. His death was the result of a ruthless execution: the young man was hit by 65 of the 80 bullets fired by the hitmen, leaving the community shocked by the brutality of the event.
The figure of “Bombazul” had attracted media attention in recent years, becoming known to the general public thanks to a report by Canal 13 that depicted him not only as one of the most representative faces of the fans, but also as a figure linked to Santiago’s organized crime. His involvement in criminal activities was not unknown to the authorities, who were investigating him for a series of serious crimes: from robbery to the murder of a fan of Colo Colo, a team historically a rival of Universidad de Chile. According to the investigation, the crime would have occurred following the derby in March, in an escalation of violence that would have also included the stabbing of another rival supporter and the attack of a third, who was seriously injured by gunshots.
The murder of Olivares Días is just the latest episode in a long series of violence linked to soccer rivalries and internal struggles within organized crime in the Chilean capital. Law enforcement is working to clarify the dynamics and those responsible for this ambush, while there is growing concern about the increase in violence involving the most extremist fringes of organized football fans and their links to crime.
