A ruthless gang of nine "travelers" from Campania has been convicted of a series of thefts committed between August and October 2023 in the provinces of Florence, Lucca, Pistoia, and Siena. Investigators have nicknamed them the "ghosts" for their ability to disappear into thin air after each robbery.
The gang's modus operandi was well-tested: they arrived in Tuscany on board high-powered cars, stole license plates to confuse the investigations and set up base in a caravan in Prato. After having studied the victims' homes, they acted at night, taking advantage of the owners' absence.
The investigations, conducted by the Carabinieri, allowed to reconstruct in detail the activities of the gang. Thanks to wiretaps, shadowing and analysis of video surveillance images, the investigators were able to identify those responsible for a series of robberies, some of which were particularly audacious.
In October 2023, the police They carried out a series of searches, finding a veritable arsenal in the gang's caravan: cutting-edge burglary tools, cash, jewelry, luxury watches, and designer handbags, all the proceeds of the thefts. In addition, a counterfeit siren and shovel were found, used to simulate authority and facilitate the escape.
Eight members of the gang were sentenced with the ordinary trial to terms ranging from 5 years and 2 months to 5 years and 4 months of imprisonment. The alleged “lookout”, who had chosen the abbreviated trial, was sentenced to 2 years in prison and a 400 euro fine.
