Sorrento. The fourth edition of the Trofeo Regina Giovanna, held from 4 to 6 October in the splendid waters of Marina Grande, ended with great enthusiasm.
The event, dedicated to traditional wooden lateen sail boats, once again celebrated Sorrento's ancient maritime tradition, linked to the commercial and fishing activities of the area.
Sponsored by the Municipality of Sorrento and organized by the Cantiere del legno Aprea, the Sorrento section of the Italian Naval League and the Circolo Alimuri of Meta, the event saw the participation of fifteen boats from various locations in Southern Italy.
Luigi Di Prisco, president of the Sorrento city council, underlined the importance of the initiative: “The Regina Giovanna Trophy is an event that aims to keep alive the tradition of the lateen sail, closely linked to the mastery of our master shipwrights and our maritime history.
This event is not only an opportunity for sailing enthusiasts, but also represents a showcase for the cultural and tourist heritage of Sorrento. The lateen sail is a symbol of our identity and allows us to promote in a sustainable way the bond with the sea, an invaluable resource for our development”.
The gathering, which is part of the Circuito delle Sirene del Sud Italia, touched significant stages such as Salerno, Pisciotta, Reggio Calabria, Scilla, Palinuro and Vico Equense, and attracted the attention of enthusiasts and tourists who were able to admire the magnificent boats, testimony to the great craftsmanship and tradition of the Sorrento master shipwrights.
“Initiatives like this are essential not only for the preservation of our traditions, but also for the tourist and cultural development of the city,” added Di Prisco. “The lateen sail represents an opportunity to relaunch the importance of the sea as a strategic resource for our territory, promoting tourism that values authenticity and sustainability.”
The three-day regatta was characterized not only by sporting competitions, but also by convivial moments, with events on land that allowed participants and the public to immerse themselves in the maritime culture of Sorrento.
The awards ceremony was held on the afternoon of October 6, to the great satisfaction of the crews and organizers.
