Icelandic Fiorentina forward Albert Gudmundsson has been acquitted of sexual assault charges by the Reykjavik District Court. The news was reported by major Icelandic media. The alleged incident occurred in the summer of 2023, but the player, currently playing in Italy with Fiorentina, was not present in court during the trial.
Defense attorney Vilhjálmur H. Vilhjálmsson expressed satisfaction with the verdict, calling it “comprehensive and well-reasoned” in an interview with the Icelandic daily Vísir.is. According to the attorney, Guðmundsson’s testimony was deemed credible and the state prosecutor is unlikely to appeal to the Court of Appeal, given the solid basis of the verdict.
The acquittal puts an end to a story that has attracted a lot of attention, in Iceland and consequently also in Italy, and above all it represents an important relief for the footballer, who will now be able to concentrate exclusively on his football career and his adventure in Florence.
