From 17 to 19 October, the “BiblioErica” municipal library in Capaccio Paestum will host an event for reflection and study on the theme of travel, thanks to the IX International Conference of Studies of Dialogues on the Archaeology of Magna Graecia and the Mediterranean, entitled “Travels are the Travelers.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Travel
The conference will offer an analysis of the theme of travel through a multidisciplinary approach, starting from the dawn of the history of the Mediterranean. The movements of people who have conveyed goods, objects, ideas and ideologies over time will be examined from a cultural and historical point of view. The aim is to stimulate a discussion on the meaning of travel, as well as on its continuities and discontinuities over time and on the differences between cultural models.
Rich Program of Presentations and Discussions
The event will be opened by Emanuele Greco, President of the Paestum Foundation, and Tiziana d'Angelo, Director of the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia. During the first day, participants will be guided through different aspects of travel: from the Homeric epic to maritime archaeology, from travelers of the Roman Empire to medieval pilgrimages, up to travel in contemporary literature and cinema. In particular, the role of travel in the "seventh art" and its connection with archaeology and history will be discussed.
Thematic In-Depth Sections
The following days of the conference will be organized into thematic sections, each dedicated to a specific aspect of travel. The “Circulation of People” will be explored through stories and the phenomenon of the Grand Tour, the “Circulation of Goods” focusing on objects, contexts and coins, and the “Circulation of Ideas”, with a particular attention to the transmission of techniques, visual languages, myths and cults. At the end of each session, a space for discussion will be opened, in order to promote a constructive dialogue between speakers and the audience.
