The fourth and final season of "My Brilliant Friend" returns to Rai 1 on November 11. Lila and Lenù are now adults. Lenù, a successful writer who travels between Paris and northern Italy, juggles a failed marriage, two teenage daughters she struggles to raise, and a complicated relationship with Nino, who won't leave his wife Eleonora.
Lila, on the other hand, remained in Naples, where she became an IT entrepreneur and the leader of the neighborhood, a charismatic figure frowned upon by the Solara brothers, linked to the Camorra. After years of attempts at emancipation, the two friends seem to be back where they started.
These complex and beloved characters from contemporary Italian literature have captivated audiences thanks to the television series based on Elena Ferrante's bestselling novel, My Brilliant Friend. Lila and Lenù, with their contradictions, challenges, and moments of happiness, return to the screen for a fourth season, following premieres in New York and at the Rome Film Fest.
Alba Rohrwacher, who plays Lenù, explained to reporters: "Elena Ferrante's powerful writing was our guiding spirit.

The series, produced by Rai Fiction and based on the novel Storia della bambina perduta (Edizioni E/O), features a partially renewed cast: in addition to Rohrwacher, there are Irene Maiorino in the role of Lila, Fabrizio Gifuni (Nino), Sonia Bergamasco, Pier Giorgio Bellocchio, Stefano Dionisi, Anna Rita Vitolo, Lino Musella and Edoardo Pesce. The direction is entrusted to Laura Bispuri, while the screenplay is written by Saverio Costanzo, Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo and Laura Paolucci.
The passing of the torch between the actresses was marked at the end of the third season, with the overlapping images of Margherita Mazzucco and Alba Rohrwacher. Maiorino, who plays the new Lila, explains: "I chose a solitary path to better understand a character I've loved since I was 14. My Lila will only fully reveal herself at the end of the 10 episodes, revealing a crack in her drama."
Gifuni, who plays a charming but deceptive Nino, says he was initially hesitant: "I didn't know My Brilliant Friend very well when I auditioned. Playing a character like Nino, full of contradictions, was a complex challenge."
Produced by HBO and Rai Fiction, the series is the result of a collaboration between Fandango, The Apartment, Fremantle Italy, Wildside, and Mowe, and has contributed significantly to the internationalization of Italian series, as Luigi Mariniello of Rai Fiction points out.
