Maria Rosaria Boccia is being investigated by the Pisa prosecutor's office for fraud in relation to "facts concerning the alleged participation in a business project involving a property, which occurred in 2021". This was stated by the prosecutor of Pisa, Teresa Angela Camelio, in a press release. The prosecutor's office deemed it necessary to release this information because "there are specific reasons of public interest in the release" of the press release, due to the fact that "news has already circulated concerning the possible involvement of Maria Rosaria Boccia in a criminal proceeding attributed to her and that the non-univocal nature of the content could be detrimental to the interested party".
The criminal proceedings against the Pompeii entrepreneur, known for the affair that led to the resignation of former Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, are currently "in the preliminary investigation phase". According to the note, "the subject, therefore, benefits from the presumption of innocence until the final pronouncement of the sentence".
