Health Minister Orazio Schillaci announced in an interview with “Repubblica” his intention to hire nurses from India. “During the recent G7 Health Summit, I spoke with the Indian deputy minister. There are about 3,3 million nurses in India, a significant number.
We would like to bring here, initially, about 10 thousand. The idea is that the Regions will take care of the recruitment, and some, like the Campania, are already moving to insert them into the lanes. We will limit ourselves to acting as an intermediary, perhaps verifying with the consular authorities the actual knowledge of our language by those who intend to work in Italy.
Professional training in India is of a good level, so there are no problems in this sense. In fact, in Italy there is a shortage of 30 thousand nurses and we are among the countries that pay them the worst. It is necessary to increase salaries and expand their duties,” he explained.
Looking ahead to 2025, Schillaci foresees more resources (€5 billion) and hopes that further funds can be added, as happened this year. The goal, he continues, is to obtain concrete results to improve the conditions of healthcare workers.
Before the maneuver, he also announced a hiring plan for 2025: "I had spoken of a multi-year plan. The Regions still have to send us their three-year hiring plan, as required by the decree on waiting lists, specifying how many resources they need.
” Regarding waiting lists, Schillaci emphasizes that the Regions have not yet exhausted the billion euros allocated in past years to reduce waiting times: “There are still 200 million unused. We are willing to provide new resources, but first they must use the available ones”.
