On October 25th at 10.30 am, at the Santa Maria del Purgatorio ad Arco Complex in Naples (via dei Tribunali 39), the Memorandum of Understanding Il Miglio della Memoria will be signed, proposed by the Superintendency of Archives and Bibliography of Campania which involves eighteen prestigious public and private cultural institutions in the ancient centre of Naples.
Taking into account the purposes and objectives, the Municipality of Naples has communicated its intention to adhere to the Protocol by signing it in the person of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi.
The Miglio della Memoria is a new cultural system aimed at valorizing the immense heritage of archives and libraries – over two million volumes and 120 linear km of archive documents – preserved in the area delimited by the three decumani of the Ancient Center of Naples.
The agreement is called The Mile of Memory precisely to underline the smallness of the territorial extension in which, however, a unique heritage is preserved.
The Memorandum of Understanding was created with the following aims: to create an archive and a widespread library, promoting public use and implementing "memory tourism"; to consolidate and enrich the system of cultural institutes present in the ancient center of Naples, opening up to a further narration of the city, capable of offering the "cultured traveler" innovative and new paths;
use shared technologies to enhance the value of archive and bibliographic heritage; open the spaces of conservation of archives and libraries to a wider public, not only researchers and specialists;
to give life to common initiatives – events, seminars and conferences, concerts, theatrical performances, dance – that support the promotion, dissemination and communication of the cultural heritage present within Il Miglio della Memoria.
“The Memorandum of Understanding Il Miglio della Memoria represents the metaphor of what needs to be done in Italian archives: overcome institutional distinctions, systematize, arrive at unitary databases that collect digitized documents in a single body”, declares the General Director of Archives Antonio Tarasco.
“With the involvement of the Municipality of Naples and numerous public and private cultural institutions, to whom I extend my thanks, this initiative promotes the diffusion of the culture of memory, opening new horizons for research and for the public, bringing more and more people closer to the historical wealth preserved by the archives”.
“With the protocol – adds Gabriele Capone, superintendent of archives and bibliography of Campania – we intend to promote a cultural itinerary that has as its stops the archives and libraries of the Old Center of Naples, notable buildings for their history and architecture, which preserve a documentary heritage unique in the world.
It is therefore a question of opening up to other audiences – not only scholars, researchers and specialists – often unknown spaces of the city, and at the same time, offering alternative – but no less significant – routes to the more attentive and demanding tourist, who travels along the decumani of the city.
The strong support of so many prestigious Neapolitan institutions is significant: it is a beautiful page of a new cultural vision, but also a beautiful example of civic commitment of the bond that we all have for the city of Naples".
Representatives of all the institutions involved will be present at the signing ceremony.
