Nello Genovese, the courageous shopkeeper who foiled a robbery in Via Nazionale Torrette in Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, recounted his experience on “Pomeriggio Cinque”.
Genovese, owner of a pet shop, chased away the thieves who were trying to rob the nearby jewelry store.
His heroic gesture was also praised by the deputy of the Green Left Alliance, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who declared: “He did not back down in front of the criminals and took the risk himself.
For some it might seem like little, but for me it is a lot.” Borrelli also reiterated the need to increase security in the area.
Armed only with a broom, Genovese managed to repel the robbers. Speaking to “Pomeriggio Cinque” he explained: “I was in my shop and I noticed a suspicious car approaching.
When I went out, they pointed a rifle at me. I immediately understood the danger and went back in to grab the first thing I found, a broom. Then I went out again, shouting to call the police. At that moment, the other shopkeepers and residents of the street also intervened and this put the criminals to flight.”
Genovese acted on instinct, driven by the desire to protect the nearby jewelry store, whose owner he knows well: "I didn't think about it, I just did what came naturally to me. I heard the screams of my colleague's employee and I decided to act like this," he said during the show hosted by Myrta Merlino.
