The Pianeta Mare Film Festival (PMFF) opened its third edition in Naples on October 7, continuing its mission to unite young talents in cinema and marine biology. The festival’s roots are in the city itself, where Étienne-Jules Marey gave birth to cinema and Anton Dohrn founded modern marine biology.

Protagonists: Young Directors and Videomakers

This year, the festival welcomes twenty students under 30 from various European and Italian universities, offering them the opportunity to participate in a unique Videomaking Workshop. Under the direction of director Valerio Ferrara, recently awarded the "La Cinef" prize at the Cannes Film Festival, participants will create free short films using only their smartphones.

Films on Environmental and Biodiversity Themes

This year's PMFF will present nearly 40 films, including three European premieres and ten Italian premieres, all dedicated to environmental and biodiversity themes.

A Traveling Festival

Organized by the Pianeta Mare Darwin Dohrn Cultural Association, the festival extends to various venues in Naples, encouraging widespread participation. The main screenings will take place at the Cinema Filangieri and the Galleria Toledo theater, culminating at the Darwin Dohrn Museum.

Exclusive Previews

The opening night featured the Italian premiere of the film "Pepe," directed by Dominican filmmaker Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Aria. Other films of interest included "Meezan" by Shahab Mihandoust and "As the Tides Come In" by Juan Palacios and Sofie Husum Johannesen, both European premieres.

A Free and Civic Event

Thanks to the support of the Film Commission of the Campania Region and the Fondazione Banco di Napoli, all PMFF screenings are free of charge. The festival aims to promote civic and ecological commitment, aiming to reach schools in areas with high rates of school dropout and crime. With an international jury chaired by Gianni Canova, the PMFF continues to grow, attracting international directors to Naples and encouraging the film industry to reflect on climate change and environmental issues.
