Pompeii, the House of Phaedra is an extraordinary "tiny house" found along Via dell'Abbondanza. It lacks the traditional atrium, but is nonetheless richly adorned. A new archaeological discovery, therefore, emerged from excavations in the Insula dei Casti Amanti.
Unique and Mythological Decorations
The rooms brought to light so far show frescoes of surprising quality, some of which depict mythological scenes. Among these, a well-preserved fresco of the myth of Hippolytus and Phaedra. Other depictions include a symplegma scene between a satyr and a nymph, a painting of a divine couple, probably Venus and Adonis, and what is believed to be a Judgement of Paris, damaged by explorations during the Bourbon period.
Details of the Environment and Ritualistic Findings
A courtyard, thought to have housed construction work during the 79 AD eruption, also reveals valuable decorations, particularly on a small lararium. This domestic altar features exquisite paintings of plant and animal motifs. Inside, ritual objects discovered, such as an incense burner and a lamp, offer insight into the life and practices of the time. Ongoing investigations at the site are providing important details on the planning and structure of the Insula dei Chaste Amanti. The entire excavation project is accompanied by a system of elevated walkways, designed to allow visitors to follow the activities in real time. The exceptional work of the Pompeii Park archaeologists is an example of public archaeology and transparency, as emphasized by the Park's Director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, who states: "It is an example of public archaeology, or, as I prefer to call it, circular archaeology: conservation, research, management, accessibility, and use form a virtuous cycle." This research has also been documented and will be presented in a program by Alberto Angela on Raiuno, with a premiere at the Rome Film Fest.
