Brawl outside Poggioreale prison – Tragedy averted late last Friday afternoon near Poggioreale prison, where a brawl between two homeless people was stopped by the timely intervention of the Penitentiary Police.
During the fight, one of the two men, a Nigerian citizen, was hit several times with a club and a pair of 30-centimeter scissors. The situation, already very serious, could have degenerated further had it not been for the arrival of the police, who stopped the attacker before the attack could turn into tragedy.
Despite the opposition of the police, the attacker attempted to take the gun from one of the officers. The State Police intervened to identify the man, while the Carabinieri proceeded to arrest and detain him immediately, followed by a direct trial. The victim was entrusted to the care of 118.
In a note, Vincenzo Santoriello, national delegate of the Con.Si.Pe. union, and vice-president Luigi Castaldo expressed appreciation for the courage and sense of duty of the Penitentiary Police personnel, underlining how the intervention has “prevented one of the non-EU citizens from losing his life.”
The situation of tension has also increased following the recent transfer of numerous prisoners from the prison of Avellino, transferred outside the region with the support of approximately 200 Penitentiary Police officers of the Mobile Operations Group (Gom). The operation has helped restore order and has ensured, for the moment, greater working serenity at the Irpinia prison, which is expecting further reinforcements for the penitentiary staff.
