In a joint operation, law enforcement agencies have dealt a severe blow to drug trafficking in Avellino, dismantling a large criminal organization that operated in the Irpinia capital.
The investigations, conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office and coordinated by Chief Prosecutor Domenico Airoma, brought to light an alarming picture, revealing a well-structured drug dealing system involving various types of drugs, including methadone.
The investigation, which lasted about two years and was conducted through environmental and telephone interceptions, allowed us to reconstruct in detail the illicit activities of the suspects.
The latter, operating in a coordinated manner and sometimes even individually, procured narcotic substances mainly in the areas of Scampia, in Naples, and Castello di Cisterna, in the province of CasertaThe drug was then introduced into Avellino and distributed at retail among consumers.
A particularly disturbing aspect that emerged from the investigations concerns the exploitation of methadone. Some of the suspects, in fact, were found to be involved in an illicit trade of this substance, intended for patients in substitution therapy. The doses of methadone, stolen or purchased illegally, were resold on the black market, further fueling the business of the criminal organization.
The police operation, which involved dozens of soldiers and the help of a helicopter, ended with the execution of fifteen precautionary custody orders. Nine suspects were arrested and placed under house arrest, while six others were ordered to remain in their homes and report to the judicial police.
