Naples. An Italian tourist from Istanbul was stopped at Capodichino Airport with 20 coral specimens without authorization or documentation.
The man was stopped by officials of the Customs and Monopolies Agency – Naples Customs Office 1 – Capodichino Airport SOT, together with the financial police of the Capodichino Company.
Thanks to the prevention and fight against illegal trafficking, they stopped and fined an Italian citizen from Istanbul for having transported and illegally introduced into the national territory 20 specimens of coral, without the authorization and documentation required by the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
During the inspection of the passenger's baggage, the operators found the corals, belonging to the order “Scleractinia Bourne” and included in Appendix II of the CITES Convention and in Annex B of EC Regulation 338/97, without the necessary documentation for import.
Following the expert assessment, the violation was confirmed and a fine of between €3.000 and €15.000 was imposed, pursuant to Article 2, paragraph 3, of Law No. 150 of 7 February 1992. The corals were also seized.
This operation demonstrates the constant commitment of the Customs and Monopolies Agency and the Guardia di Finanza in protecting the community and in the fight against illicit trafficking.
