Spalletti on Balotelli – Openness and inclusion are the key words of Luciano Spalletti, who on Dazn Serie A Show talks about his approach as Italy coach and reflects on some returns in Italian football. When asked about Mario Balotelli, hired by Genoa, Spalletti says: “We don’t close the doors to anyone. We absorb everything that is good in football and put it at the service of the team”.
The Italian coach also commented on the curious desire expressed by Francesco Totti to return to the field: “Totti has always been creative in coming up with passes for his teammates; I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to return to playing,” Spalletti says with a smile. When asked for a prediction on the Ballon d'Or, Spalletti responds without hesitation: “For me, Kroos”, but avoiding naming other names.
Speaking about his journey with the national team, Spalletti explains that he sought a balance between experienced players and young talents. "We have considered those who already have experience in our football, choosing leaders capable of guiding the youngsters. We are aiming for a mix of these two souls. After intense championships, like Inter's which ended early, it becomes difficult to maintain high concentration, and I experienced it too after winning the Scudetto".
Spalletti, the goal is now to build a team capable of responding tactically on multiple fronts, exploiting the qualities of the many midfielders available: "The path is the right one. Our players are involved in a collective growth, where each department moves in synergy. We do not aim for the individual play of the champion, but for a choral work".
Spalletti then praised Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who is back in great shape: “After a difficult period, he has found his quality again, and it is a pleasure to see him on the pitch. He is the man we always want to have in the dressing room.” Speaking about Lorenzo Pellegrini, Spalletti defines him "fundamental" for his ability in set pieces: “He has great versatility, he can be a striker, a midfielder, a builder who starts from the defense. He knows football inside out, and it shows.” Finally, Spalletti turns his thoughts to Naples, a city that has marked his path: "It always gives me great emotions, both the team and the city. I am attached to players I coached there, and I know they are men of great depth."
