Former Intesa Sanpaolo employee Vincenzo Coviello is under investigation for having made over 6.600 illicit accesses to the bank accounts of approximately 3.500 customers, including numerous politicians, celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment, and executives of the bank itself.

According to the investigations, Coviello would have carried out a real espionage activity, systematically consulting the accounts of these people for a period of over two years. Among the political figures spied there would be several representatives of the majority and opposition, as well as former prime ministers.

The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, expressed deep concern about this incident, underlining how such actions could undermine democracy and destabilize the political framework.

For the owner of the Viminale, “the whole thing is aimed at delegitimizing and destabilizing the political framework.” It is up to the judicial investigations, he added, "to say exactly what happened, but these are worrying phenomena, although the system has its antibodies: today certain things can hardly be done without being discovered, perhaps later, we must equip ourselves to try to prevent them".

Of the approximately 6.600 accesses Regarding the approximately 3.500 customers of Intesa Sanpaolo, the sources reiterate, the number of political figures questioned by the employee fired by the bank was 34. Another 43 are personalities known to the news as figures in the world of sport, entertainment and other fields.

In addition to these, there are approximately 70 figures within the bank, in particular top management and managers. The remaining accesses concern natural and legal persons related to the personal, local and professional sphere of the former employee.

Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina will propose to the bank's board of directors, scheduled for next week, the appointment of Carabinieri Corps General Antonio De Vita as group chief security officer, a new area reporting to the CEO with responsibility for cyber security and safety.

This is what we learn from sources in the banking group. General De Vita held, before reaching retirement in July, responsibility for the regions of Puglia, Campania, Abruzzo and Molise. From September 1st he was hired by Carlo Messina in his staff as a senior advisor on security and cyber issues.
