The Carabinieri of the NOE of Naples have dismantled a dangerous criminal organization dedicated to the illicit trafficking of waste between Campania and Puglia. The operation, coordinated by the Bari District Anti-Mafia Directorate, led to the arrest of eight people and the seizure of assets worth 1,2 million euros.
The investigations, which began in 2020, revealed a well-structured system that involved the illegal transportation and disposal of large quantities of industrial and urban waste in various locations in Capitanata and Lower Molise. The waste was abandoned in disused quarries, agricultural land and warehouses, often set on fire to hide the tracks.
Among the most affected sites were the countryside of Stornara, Stornarella, San Martino in Pensilis and Minervino Murge. The operating methods were always the same: falsification of transport documents and involvement of a network of transporters.
The investigation documented numerous incidents of dumping and illegal burning, including the discovery of over 200 tons of waste in various locations over the course of a few months.
The estimated illicit gain amounts to 1,2 million euros, seized together with a transport company and its assets, including a quarry used as an illegal landfill.
This operation demonstrates once again how illicit waste trafficking is a complex and profitable phenomenon, which puts public health and the environment at risk. Law enforcement agencies continue to operate tirelessly to combat this serious crime.
