Rome – Innovation and technology at the service of ethics and, therefore, of humanity. This was taught first by Guglielmo Marconi, and today UniMarconi University reiterates it, the first Italian telematic university that is celebrating its 20th anniversary together with the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Scientist.
In the Aula Magna of the headquarters in via Vittoria Colonna, in Rome, UniMarconi has called together the entire academic and political world to celebrate this double anniversary. Double like the thread that ties the values of UniMarconi to those of the person who inspired its name.
“The reason why we chose to call ourselves Marconi coincides exactly with what we are trying to convey to our students: it is important to look forward, to use and develop the full potential of future technologies to the fullest, just as Marconi did in his time and as was done twenty years ago, when this university was created, the first online.
We mainly address student workers, offering training that can then allow them to create new things, as Marconi did in his time, also a worker and not a classic university student", explained the rector of UniMarconi, Marco Abate, during the event 'Marconi example for young people. Ethics and technology at the service of humanity', an initiative organized with the patronage of the Marconi 150 National Committee.
"We are proud to host this event right within the celebrations of our twentieth anniversary. We proudly bear the name of Guglielmo Marconi because just as he brought innovation to the field of information, we too have brought a new way to provide training, in which a social function is also fulfilled: thanks to online universities, even people who live far from university locations have the opportunity to achieve the goal of a degree. Otherwise, their families would have had to face high costs", added the general manager of UniMarconi, Marco Belli.
"This event is also dedicated to the binomial between ethics and information - added the DG - today we live in an era in which digital, the means of communication, social media are tools that obviously can bring benefits also at the level of communication, but in some cases they can cause damage, as the news unfortunately teaches us, especially among young people. Our university wants to give young people the opportunity to reflect so that there can be a no longer excessive use of these means, but only benefits from them", he concluded.
Many personalities were present in the Aula Magna, including, together with the president of UniMarconi, Alessio Acomanni, also Princess Elettra Marconi and Prince Guglielmo Giovanelli Marconi, respectively daughter and grandson of the scientist.
“I am happy to be here at Guglielmo Marconi University, named after my grandfather. It is the first online university in Italy that is promoting culture for young people, which is essential if we want our country to have a future. Culture is essential to defeat corruption, ignorance and corruption. We must help the youngest above all. This is why distance learning that UniMarconi University has always promoted is essential not only for times of emergency, such as Covid, but also for students who take courses from a distant city or region. Let's move forward with this goal, remembering the pioneer, Guglielmo Marconi”.
Among the political figures present at UniMarconi to celebrate the university and Marconi's 150th birthday is the Minister of Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, according to whom this is "an important anniversary, 150 years of Guglielmo Marconi, and the title is emblematic: 'Marconi an example for young people. Ethics and technology at the service of humanity'.
It is no coincidence that national anniversaries are a mission structure entrusted to the Minister for Sport and Youth, because the theme is precisely the testimony and the possibility of being an example. Even more so on a topic of great current interest such as the relationship between technology and ethics - said the minister - which today do not always travel in harmony with each other. A theme that degenerates in many forms and that Marconi reminds us in terms of conscience precisely to a responsibility that inevitably passes through the values that can go along with technology”.
