Former Serie A referee Claudio Gavillucci relaunches the proposal to introduce "on-call VAR," emphasizing that the time has come to adopt this tool to reduce controversy and improve match management. Speaking to Radio Crc, Gavillucci explained: "I've been talking about this for a while because the discussions, even among us referees, arise more from the failure to call the VAR than from the final decision."
According to the former race director, offering teams the option to request a review via a "challenge" would help solve many of the current problems. "With the challenge available to the teams, the central referee would be given full autonomy to decide after reviewing the images."Gavillucci added. This way, the referee on the pitch could make the final decision without being influenced by the VAR's discretionary interpretation.
Referring to the specific case of the Monza-Roma match, Gavillucci stated: "I am convinced that if La Penna had reviewed the incriminated action, he would have awarded the penalty to RomeIn that case, it wasn't the referee's decision on the pitch that counted, but the VAR's interpretation."
