Naples. “The death of welfare” in the former mental asylum of Naples: it is at Leonardo Bianchi that the workers of the Gesco social cooperatives demonstrated this morning, with a sort of “social funeral” two days before the early expiration date of their employment contract, set for October 31, 2024 by the ASL Napoli 1 Centro.
A peaceful sit-in, as always in almost a month of protests that started on October 7 at Maschio Angioino, moving on to the Post Office, San Carlo, Piazza Plebiscito, Mann, the airport and the central station and even the Duomo with a social prayer to San Gennaro.
Nothing new for the 300 workers – OSS, social workers and psychologists – who have been providing assistance to the sick, the mentally ill, the elderly and disabled and people with addictions for many years. All their appeals to the ASL have gone unheard Napoli 1 Center to respect the deadline of the contract with the temporary consortium of companies led by Gesco, which should have ended on December 31st.
Yesterday, Gesco presented at a press conference the details of two appeals presented by its lawyers, one for compliance with the contract and the other for a request for compensation for damages estimated at approximately 4 million euros.
And while Gesco has asked for the activation of the Fis, the Wage Integration Fund, for the workers, for tomorrow afternoon at 15 pm the prefect of Naples Michele Di Bari has called a meeting at the Prefecture with Gesco, the ASL heads and representatives of the INPS.
Also tomorrow but at 17 pm in Santa Maria La Nova there will be a citizens' meeting with numerous social organizations to discuss support for the Gesco dispute.
