The project to make the stretch of sea in front of the Bagnoli landfill suitable for swimming appears to have reached a turning point. Plans are underway to create a sort of natural "pool" by installing two reefs.
These barriers will be positioned at the water's edge and will extend out to sea, parallel to the coast, forming a large basin to prevent currents from re-polluting the cleaned seabed near the beach.
The mayor of Naples presented this plan during the inauguration of Italy-China Week at the Città della Scienza, a major event dedicated to technology and innovation. The redevelopment of the western area and the transfer of ownership of the former Cementir area to Invitalia, the agency responsible for the project, were also discussed.
The redevelopment of the area
The Bagnoli projects have already been approved, and attention is now focused on marine remediation. The landfill, originally planned for removal, will instead be shaped and treated only in the contaminated areas.
