The Campania Regional Council has approved a law that prohibits new construction in the Campi Flegrei area at risk of bradyseism. The decision, taken with 26 votes in favor, one against and three abstentions, is the result of a bill promoted by the regional councilor for urban planning, Bruno Discepolo.
The measure, illustrated in the chamber by the president of the Regional Urban Planning Commission, Luca Cascone, aims to implement the provisions of Legislative Decree 11 June 2024, n. 76, converted into law on 8 August 2024, n. 111. “The objective is to avoid new construction interventions in the area at volcanic, seismic and bradyseismic of the Campi Flegrei, applying the same safeguard measures envisaged for the Vesuvian red zone", explained Cascone.
Interventions for the safety, functional and hygienic-sanitary adaptation of existing buildings, as well as building renovations, including demolition and reconstruction on another site, as provided for by regional urban planning law no. 16/2004, are still permitted.
The measure, supported by the majority, was opposed by councilor Maria Muscarà, the only one to vote against, while the councilors of the 5 Star Movement abstained. A choice that marks a significant step in the protection of a fragile and densely populated area, threatened by the phenomenon of bradyseism and other natural risks.
