Ercolano. Tragedy struck this afternoon in Ercolano, where a massive explosion occurred inside a fireworks factory on Via Patacca. At least two people were confirmed dead. Carabinieri officers from the Ercolano station were on scene.
Together with the military there are the firefighters, the ambulances, the civil protection and the mayor of Ercolano, Ciro Buonajuto with some administrators.
The local police cordoned off the area to prevent unnecessary intrusions and facilitate the task of rescuers. The explosion would have occurred in a warehouse, which may have contained fireworks but the circumstance has not yet been confirmed.
The huge cloud of white smoke coming out of the factory blown up is visible from several kilometers away and in many neighboring municipalities. The first rescuers who arrived on the scene found themselves faced with horrifying scenes.
