The plot follows the adventures of three boys—Benedetto, Sebastiano, and Domenico—who flee their village and the semi-slavery conditions of the mining tunnels. At the same time, French journalist Philippe Calieri investigates the social phenomenon linked to this exploitation.

The story behind the novel

Philippe Calieri, thanks to a network of informants and colleagues, uncovers the maritime trafficking that transported many "carusi" from Sicily to Marseille. There, the young men were directed to factories or ended up in the hands of Marseille's criminal underworld, known for the brutality and scale of its trafficking in the Mediterranean. A compelling novel that portrays sociological aspects of a dark era in Italian history.

The guests of the event

At the presentation event, the author will be joined by Professor Francesco Soverina of the Institute of the History of the Resistance and Tonia De Giuseppe, associate professor of special education and inclusion at Giustino Fortunato University. Readings by Giancarlo Lobasso will accompany the evening, while musical entertainment will be provided by the "Mandolincanto" duo, composed of singer Laura Misticone and mandolinist Claudia Qu. Journalist Laura Bufano will organize and host the event.
