A team of scientists has discovered the world's largest coral in the waters of the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific. This giant, a unique structure of the Pavona clavus species, stretches 34 meters wide, 32 meters long and reaches a height of 5,5 meters.

A marine colossus visible from space

It is three times larger than the previous record holder and is so massive that it can even be seen from space. The coral, located near the Three Sisters group of islands, is made up of a network of nearly a billion polyps, tiny soft organisms that together build these extraordinary formations. The marine giant is estimated to be around 300 years old, providing a unique window into ocean conditions over the past three centuries.

Extraordinary discovery and living habitat

San Félix, an underwater filmmaker with National Geographic’s Pristine Seas program, said the coral “is a natural monument, a testimony to the arrival of the first Europeans in these waters.” The discovery was made almost by accident during an exploration aboard the research vessel Argo. Scientists initially thought they had found a shipwreck, but a closer inspection revealed a living ecosystem pulsating with color and life. The coral’s cavities shelter shrimp, crabs and reef fish, which depend on the structure for reproduction and survival.

Environmental Threats and Conservation

However, despite the excitement, the discovery comes with a warning. Climate change and ocean acidification are seriously threatening coral ecosystems around the world. This mega-coral, while representing a symbol of resistance, underscores the urgency of action to protect these crucial habitats.

It's a wonderful discovery, but the important thing is that we have to pay attention to these places, which are in danger. Coral is very important for the ecosystem and must be protected from climate changes that could damage it.
