Siena. A judicial investigation will determine whether medical liability was involved in the death of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl, the victim of a devastating domestic accident. The little girl, of foreign origin but a longtime resident of Siena, accidentally swallowed a battery.
The story begins on Tuesday, November 5th, when the little girl was taken to the emergency room at Le Scotte Hospital in Siena due to illness. After approximately 10 hours of tests, she was discharged. Unfortunately, just four hours after returning home, her condition worsened again, and she was admitted to intensive care.
Initially, the parents had not reported the ingestion of the pila, but during the second hospitalization, the object was identified and removed. However, the corrosive substances released by the battery had already caused irreparable damage to the child's aorta.
Despite intensive care, the little girl's condition continued to rapidly deteriorate. On Tuesday, November 12, the difficult decision was made to urgently transfer her to Monasterio Heart Hospital in Massa Carrara, where the operating room had been alerted for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, the little girl did not survive and died shortly after her arrival.
