The fourth day of the third edition of the International Sport Film Festival provided intense emotions, with an evening dedicated to football and the historical memory of Romeo Menti, icon of the Grande Torino and symbol of sportsmanship and rebirth in post-war Italy. Scheduled until tomorrow, the festival has already presented 149 films in competition, of which 36 are finalists. Yesterday evening, at Supercinema of Castellammare, two short films out of competition have captured the attention of the public: the documentary “Romeo Menti, the grenade winger with the lily in his heart”, directed by the journalist of The nation Roberto Davide Papini, and “From Father to Son” by Vincenzo Greco, focused on the identity of the Stabia fans.
Article Key Points
Papini's docufilm retraced in 18 minutes the exploits of Menti, former footballer of Fiorentina, Stabia and Grande Torino, celebrating his human and sporting value. Touching images of Superga and period films aroused great emotion in the room. “Seeing this documentary was exciting. Romeo Menti is a historic symbol for our stadium and for the whole Castellammare" said Andrea Langella, president of Juve Stabia, present at the evening to receive a plaque from the organization. Langella also hoped that Menti's figure will be further celebrated with a technical table in FIGC for the claim of the 1945 Scudetto, supported by the StabiAmore association.
Even the former sporting director of Napoli, Torino and Juve Stabia, Gigi Pavarese, wanted to remember the importance of Menti: “He was a hero of the Grande Torino and the last to score before the Superga tragedy. His spirit still lives today in the Filadelfia stadium and Superga, places steeped in Granata history.” Pavarese did not fail to express his wishes for the next Serie A match: “I hope Napoli wins against Torino and can aim for the Scudetto, but I also hope the Granata can soon find their identity again.”
Art and sport, a winning combination
Tourism Councillor Nunzia Acanfora underlined the importance of the event for Castellammare: “The combination of sport and art, in this case cinematographic, is fundamental. We are proud to host a kermesse that enhances our territory and celebrates sporting and cultural excellence.” Among the audience, in addition to approximately 150 spectators, there were representatives of the StabiAmore association, personalities from the sports world and journalists.
The festival, organized by the Pragma Association with the support of the Campania Region and the Film Commission Campania, will end tomorrow with the award ceremony for the winning films. Leading the event are the organizational director Nicola D'Auria and the artistic director Ciro Sorrentino, who have transformed the International Sport Film Festival into a prestigious event for the Italian cinema and sports scene.
