A new chapter of hope and redemption opens in Melito di Napoli with the inauguration of the House of Ros and Upendo Community, two structures intended for young people, built inside a property confiscated from organised crime.
The official ceremony took place on Wednesday 27 November 2024, at 11 am, at Via delle Ginestre in Parco Margherita, a event's audience full of meaning for the entire community.
The two structures, managed by the social cooperative World on the Move, were dedicated to Rosario Mauriello, young innocent victim of the camorra. Rosario, born in Melito in 1973, dreamed of becoming a policeman and loved football. His life, and that of his family, were tragically marked on 11 January 1994, when the young man was killed by an error of organised crime. The House of Ros, a residential community for minors that, together with the Upendo Community – a family-sized educational structure – wants to offer young people in the area a safe place, full of opportunities and support.
The ceremony was attended by Rosario Mauriello's family, who wanted to share the memory of their loved one with those present. “This place is a beacon of hope and rebirth – said one of the relatives – so that no young person ever has to suffer what happened in Rosario again." The ceremony was attended by institutional representatives of the Campania Region and the City of Melito di Napoli, who underlined the importance of the project in the context of the fight against crime and in supporting minors in difficulty.
The construction of the structures, entrusted by the Municipality to the social cooperative World on the Move, represents a concrete example of how assets confiscated from criminals can be transformed into places of inclusion and growth. “Casa di Ros and Upendo are not just structures – declared a representative of the Municipality – but the symbol of the redemption of a community that looks to the future with confidence."
Casa di Ros and the Upendo Community do not limit themselves to offering hospitality: they represent an opportunity for young people to rediscover the value of education, respect and solidarity, building solid foundations for a different future. The inauguration thus marks an important moment for Melito, demonstrating how, even in places marked by violence and illegality, it is possible to create new stories of hope and change.
