Italian cuisine in New York has lost one of its protagonists: Gianfranco Sorrentino, a prominent figure and owner of the famous restaurants Il Gattopardo and The Leopard at des Artistes, has passed away. He had been battling an illness for some time.

Originally from Naples, Sorrentino began his career in the restaurant business at a very young age. Arriving in the United States in the 80s, he opened his first restaurant, Sette MoMA, in the 90s, located at the Museum of Modern Art: an innovative fine dining proposal within a museum institution.

He didn't stray far from MoMA to create Il Gattopardo, which has become one of the symbols of authentic Italian cuisine in New York.

Sorrentino was one of the first to bring true Italian gastronomic tradition to the United States, always maintaining a rigorous commitment to authenticity. His passion, combined with his approach to customers, made Il Gattopardo a destination for celebrities, politicians, financiers, and artists.

As president of the Italian Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Italian culture and cuisine, Sorrentino has further contributed to spreading the values and flavors of the Bel Paese.

Gianfranco leaves behind his wife Paola, his life and work partner, and his children Sofia and Edoardo. With his passing, the restaurant world loses an ambassador of Italianness.
