The Voyage of Fonteneau and Quirante Rives
The exhibition draws inspiration from the trip to Naples by Éric Fonteneau and José Vicente Quirante Rives in March 2022, when they visited the church of the Certosa di San Martino. This trip led to the publication of Quirante's book "Twelve Grinding Heralds" and the production of Fonteneau's drawings, exhibited for the first time. Both works represent a dialogue between Italian, Spanish, and French cultures, reflecting on Ribera's artistic contribution.
Ribera and His Naturalism
In the seventeenth century, the painter Jusepe de Ribera used Neapolitan models to represent various prophets commissioned by the prior of the Certosa di San Martino. Fonteneau, through drawing, reinterprets these subjects, highlighting how their prosaic aspect was sublimated by their placement in the iconographic context of the church. Ribera's prophets, placed under Giovanni Lanfranco's apostles, offer an example of naturalism transformed into sacred art.
