The Interuniversity Conference "Platform Consumerism after TikTok" will be held in Naples from November 28-30, 2024, to discuss the impact of digital platforms on contemporary consumption.

"Platform Consumerism after TikTok," the Inter-University Conference Prin Projects, is underway. It will be held from November 28 to 30, 2024, at the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II and at the Riot Studio, both venues located in the heart of Naples' historic center.

This is an important and educational opportunity for anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge of the changes in consumer society, dominated by algorithmic logic and digital platforms.

The three-day academic conference will be held on November 28th and 29th at the Department of Social Sciences' headquarters, located at Vico Monte della Pietà 1. The first day will be in Room 1 (Aula Magna) and the second day in Room T-3. The third and final day will be held at the Riot Studio cultural center, located at Via San Biagio dei Librai 39.

The purpose of the academic event is to demonstrate and discuss the results achieved to date by two research groups—"Coping with multiple crises. Youth and identity in Milan and Naples" and "Algofeed, Feedback culture: assessing the effects of algorithmic recommendations on platformized consumption"—relating to the topic of consumerism in the platform society following TikTok.

During the first day, following the institutional greetings of Professor and Department Director Dora Gambardella, Professor Adam Arvidsson and Professor Gabriella Punziano, Massimo Airoldi, Alessandro Gandini, Alessandro Caliandro, Andrea Russo, Ilir Rama, Gabriella Punziano, Suania Acampa, Giuseppe Michele Padricelli, Antonio Vettori, Domenico Trezza and Noemi Crescentini will speak.

The presentations will focus on explaining digital consumption habits in the platform society and the algorithmic era, presenting the theoretical horizons and methodological challenges of data donation, and the research design, insights, and preliminary results of the Algofeed project, which aims to understand and evaluate the impact of recommendation algorithms on cultural consumption (e.g., music, films, etc.) within social media platforms in Italy, with a specific focus on YouTube and TikTok.

During the second day of the academic event, Vincenzo Luise, Adam Arvidsson, Eugenia Santoro, Sabrina Bellafronte, Brigida Orria, Roberto Graziano, Sofia Torre, Emanuela Francini, Luca Recano, Camilla Volpe, and Vincenzo Laezza will speak.

The presentations will explore the dynamics of grassroots platformization, introducing the pragmatism of the platform, baroque economies, the digitalization of the counterfeit market, the popular industriousness of small and medium-sized Neapolitan entrepreneurs, the plebeian habitus and love and consumption on TikTok, porn tube platforms, popular serial and neomelodic narratives originating from TikTok, the popular mediatization of tourism, and the economy of AI-based apps.

The third and final day of the academic event, which will take place at the Riot Studio from 10.00:14.00 a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m., will feature a presentation of "The Hipster Economy," written by Alessandro Gerosa. The text focuses on an analysis of hipsterism, highlighting the importance of the hipster aesthetic, which is grounded in authenticity, a key characteristic of today's consumer economy, which impacts the urban fabric.

After the presentation, the book's contents will be discussed by Adam Arvidsson, Alessandro Gandini, and Alessandro Caliandro. This will be followed by an art exhibition featuring posters created by the conference speakers, which will reiterate and visually highlight the themes covered during the previous days of academic discussion.

The event will conclude with an open debate and a final greeting.
Please note that the Prin Projects is funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, is supported by MUR and Italia Domani and involves the Algofeed project.
