A Museum of the City of Naples, celebrating the centuries-old history of the Neapolitan capital, could soon become a reality. The idea, which includes the establishment of the structure at Maschio Angioino, is at the center of a project promoted by the municipal administration, as explained by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi in an official note.
“The debate on the birth of a museum that tells the story of Naples is enriched by proposals and reflections of great interest, such as those advanced by Andrea Carandini in the Corriere della Sera and by Giuliano Volpe in the Huffington Post. These contributions relaunch a crucial theme for the Administration that I have led for three years,” he declares Manfredi.
According to the mayor, the project began to take shape about two years ago, when it was included in the Guidelines for the cultural policy of the city and the metropolitan area. “We are fully aware of the need to enhance, promote and produce culture as a strategic resource for Naples,” says Manfredi.

The mayor imagines an innovative museum, capable of going beyond the mere display of valuable objects. “I like the idea of a container that is a living place, open to the community, where participation and shared planning are central. Especially for the new generations, who must be able to 'live' the museum more than just visit it,” he emphasizes.
Manfredi says he is convinced that Naples is ready to host a City Museum. “The start of a national debate, articulated and qualified, will help us define a solid and shared project,” he concludes.
The initiative represents an important step towards the cultural valorization of Naples, which could thus equip itself with a symbolic place dedicated to the narration of its extraordinary historical identity.
