Naples. The screams, the clear bangs of something heavy and then silence. An anonymous phone call alerted the Carabinieri yesterday evening to something suspicious in the carpentry shop on Via dei Mosaici in Ponticelli.
When the military arrived on the scene, shortly after 20pm last night, they found the lifeless body of Arturo Panico, 71 years old with several criminal records but no ties to local organised crime, lying on the ground.
The carpenter, who had been living in his workshop, sleeping in precarious conditions, was killed in what had become his refuge.

A drug addict and already known to law enforcement for petty crimes, the seventy-one-year-old from Sant'Anastasia was not affiliated with organized crime, but appears to have incurred a debt, likely related to his drug addiction. This could be the motive for the murder, but the Prosecutor's Office is conducting a comprehensive investigation, although the case remains complex.
The blunt weapon that struck Panic on the forehead and nape of the neck was not found at the crime scene, and in that area of Ponticelli there are few active surveillance cameras.
The carpentry shop has been seized, as has the body, which will undergo an autopsy in the coming hours. The examination could provide useful information to clarify the many questions surrounding the crime.
