Catania - Operation Taken Down, carried out by the Catania Postal Police and several international police forces, represents a significant intervention in the fight against cybercrime. This operation, coordinated by the Catania Public Prosecutor's Office, dismantled part of a criminal organization with operations in Italy and the Netherlands, capable of generating estimated profits of around €3 billion annually, while causing €10 billion in damages to service providers.
A complex cyber operation
The complexity of the operation was highlighted by Catania's prosecutor, Francesco Curcio, who emphasized the need for a detailed cyber investigation to reconstruct the mechanisms by which the suspects penetrated the protected systems of television providers. A pyramid scheme for managing the illicit activities allowed the pirated data to be distributed to millions of users, who could benefit from subscriptions at significantly lower prices than those offered by legal channels.
Broad international participation
The criminal network operated not only domestically but also had international ramifications, with suspects in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany, and servers located in Hong Kong and Romania. The Italian cities involved range from Catania to Milan, Naples to Florence, and numerous other locations, highlighting the geographic scope and complexity of the operation.
An investigation that exposed a widespread and well-orchestrated criminal network, demonstrating the importance of international cooperation in combating the new frontiers of cybercrime.

Operation Taken Down was very important, but I don't know how they managed to find all these criminals. There are so many places where they could hide the data, and I doubt they have all been found.
