Labour inequalities in the South
Full-time jobs in Southern Italy represent less than a quarter of the national total, marking a gap of 11,6 percentage points compared to Central and Northern Italy. According to ISTAT, this trend peaked in 2020, reaching a gap of 14,1 percentage points.
Contract types and hours worked
In the South of the country, the incidence of fixed-term and part-time contracts is particularly high, contributing to the widening of regional disparities. The number of hours worked per job position in the South is approximately half that of the Center-North, a figure that highlights a structural imbalance also in terms of work commitment.

Differences can also be found in wages: in the South, the average annual wage does not exceed 9.000 euros, while in the Center-North the averages do not fall below 13.000 euros. These numbers indicate that wages in the South are just over half of those in the Center-North, reflecting a persistent economic inequality between the two areas.

The disparities in employment in the South is a complex and worrying issue. Although the data is clear, more concrete actions are needed to improve the employment situation for those who live there. Let's hope for a better future.
It is really worrying to see how the employment disparities between the South and the North continue to grow. The statistics are clear, but I wonder what is being done to improve the situation. Let's hope that something changes.
