A school for learning the art of nativity scenes will open in Naples within a year, welcoming all school-age children who wish to explore this centuries-old craft. The announcement was made during the official inauguration of the traditional Christmas market by Vincenzo Capuano, president of the "Le Botteghe di San Gregorio Armeno" Association, accompanied by Marisa Laurito, the host of the ceremony.
"Wonderful news", underlined the actress, who reminded the journalists present when she used to go to San Gregorio Armeno, the picturesque street in the historic center of Naples, with his father to buy new figurines to enhance the nativity scene at home. "My father frequented the workshops of old artisans, as did my close friend Luciano de Crescenzo, who always insisted on making it clear that the true symbol of Christmas was the nativity scene, not the tree."
"The school," explains President Capuano, "will be held in the 'Taffettanari' church, which the Curia has offered on loan for use. In addition to training future artists, ensuring the continuity of this ancient craft, it will also help children who struggle with traditional schooling, keeping them away from the streets." Meanwhile, even though the Christmas holidays are still a few weeks away, the alleys of San Gregorio Armeno are already crowded with tourists, intrigued by the terracotta figurines of current celebrities. And, even here, despite being far from the courts and rackets, the winner is Jannik Sinner.
