The sentence, pronounced yesterday by preliminary hearing judge Marcello De Chiara of the Court of Naples, returned Emanuele Schiavone, son of Francesco Schiavone, known as Sandokan, to prison for three years and ten months. Francesco Reccia, son of Oreste, nicknamed "Recchia e Lepre," received a sentence of two years and eight months.

At the end of his closing speech a week ago, public prosecutor Vincenzo Ranieri had requested a five-year sentence for Schiavone, represented by lawyers Paolo Caterino and Domenico Della Gatta, and a four-year sentence for Reccia, represented exclusively by Della Gatta.

The two had been arrested on June 14th in Napoli, in the Pallonetto neighborhood, by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Nucleus of the Provincial Command of Caserta and the Casal di Principe Company, under the command of Captain Marco Busetto. The charges against them included illegal possession and carrying of firearms in a public place, drug dealing, with the aggravating circumstance of mafia. According to the investigations, they had attempted to take control of the drug market in Casal di Principe.

After being released from prison last April, Schiavone returned to his childhood home on Via Bologna. It was here, in his headquarters, that he spent his last hours of freedom before traveling to Naples, where he was arrested by the Carabinieri, who kept him under constant surveillance, including monitoring his conversations.

From the wiretaps carried out, the military - coordinated in the investigative phase by the prosecutor Simona Belluccio of the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate - reconstructed the details of a feud between the Schiavone and Reccia group and that of the Bidognettiani. The latter, with a large workforce dedicated to drug dealing and the control of prostitution, boasted common interests with Albanian and Romanian crime.

The conflict between the two factions, both intent on strengthening the Casalesi clan with new recruits and resources, reached its peak last June with three armed raids. The first and second occurred on the night between June 7 and 8: one in Piazza Mercato and the other in Via Bologna, against the Schiavone house inhabited by Emanuele and his brother Ivanhoe, targeted by machine gun fire.

The third raid, which took place between June 10 and 11, hit the Reccia home in via Ovidio in San Cipriano d'Aversa. The shots, which caused a stir and fear, not only announced the return of organized crime violence, but also occurred in a particularly delicate context: on June 8, in fact, the shots were fired in a crowded square, on the eve of the Casal di Principe administrative elections.

Despite the raids, those materially responsible for those episodes have not yet been identified. During the trial, celebrated with an abbreviated rite, and in the closing speech of the prosecutor Ranieri, it emerged several times that Emanuele Schiavone had no intention of abandoning his criminal activities. On the contrary, he was committed to rebuilding old alliances and creating new ones, organizing a new gang around himself.

When his father, Francesco Schiavone Sandokan, told him of his intention to collaborate with justice – a plan that never materialized because he was considered unreliable – Emanuele reacted with harsh words, trying to dissuade him. Now, he will have to serve another three years and ten months in prison, in addition to the 12 years he had already spent in prison until last April. For Francesco Reccia, however, this is his first experience behind bars.

It is sad to see how the lives of young people like Schiavone are wasted in illegal activities. Institutions should do more to prevent these situations and support young people towards better paths.

The conviction of Schiavone and Reccia raises questions about justice in Italy. These people always seem to find a way back into crime, the system must reform itself to stop them once and for all.

The situation of Emanuele Schiavone is very complicated and makes us reflect on the dynamics of crime in Campania. It is a cycle that seems never-ending, we hope that the authorities will be able to put an end to this violence.
