Naples. Tensions between the De Luca Bossa and De Micco-De Martino clans, who have been fighting for years over control of the Ponticelli area, have also spilled over into prison. A new episode of violence has prompted a kidnapping, aimed at forcing an affiliate to mediate between the two criminal gangs.
The latest episode, a kidnapping of a 43-year-old, brother of a prominent member of the De Luca Bossa clan, is tragic confirmation of this. The Carabinieri have arrested two perpetrators, demonstrating once again the pervasiveness of organized crime.
The kidnapping, carried out with the violence typical of criminal organizations, was intended to force the prisoner, a leading member of the De Luca Bossa clan, to intervene as a mediator in a series of beatings suffered by members of the rival clan inside the penitentiary institution.
An unmistakable sign of how the war between the two groups has now spread to every area of their existence, including prison, traditionally considered a place of detention and re-education, but which in reality, for many members, represents an extension of the battlefield.
The investigations, carried out by the Carabinieri of Cercola under the coordination of the DDA of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, began following information gathered by the military last August, when the victim was forcibly taken from a bar located in the neighbourhood Ponticelli of Naples, forced to get into the suspects' car and released a few hours later.
According to the investigators' reconstruction, the latter was supposed to act as an intermediary with his imprisoned brother, to put an end to a series of beatings of which some imprisoned members of the opposing clan had been victims. “De Micco-De Martino” of Ponticelli.
The Reasons for an Endless War
The episode is just the latest chapter in this feud that has become deeply rooted in the mentality of members of the two criminal groups vying for control of the territory and illicit activities, from drug trafficking to extortion.
