The episode, which occurred during the night, saw the mayor, a doctor by profession, as the protagonist of a courageous action that led him to put the criminals to flight.
It was around 2:30 when the mayor, still recovering from a recent eye operation and resting on the ground floor of his villa, noticed a strange presence. Four men were forcing a window. Without hesitation, Di Santo went to confront them, starting a violent fight.
Meanwhile, alerted by the screams, the mayor's wife and one of his daughters rushed to his aid and immediately contacted the police. “They were moments of terror,” said Di Santo, still shaken by the incident. “I received several shots to the chest, but I managed to hold off the criminals until my daughter grabbed the rifle. At that point, the thieves fled in a car.”
Despite the injuries sustained, the mayor wanted to emphasize the promptness of the intervention of the carabinieri. "They arrived immediately after our call," he said.
The episode deeply shocked the community of Castelvenere, which expressed solidarity and admiration for the courage shown by its mayor. Di Santo, hospitalized for tests, wanted to thank all those who were close to him in these difficult hours.
