Twenty-five officers of the Trapani penitentiary police have been reached by precautionary measures for serious accusations of torture and abuse of power against the inmates of the Pietro Cerulli prison. Eleven officers have been placed under house arrest, while another fourteen have been suspended from service.
The investigations, launched in 2021 following complaints from inmates, have brought to light a disturbing picture of systematic violence committed by officers in places without video surveillance. The installation of new cameras has made it possible to document the repeated attacks suffered by inmates.
In total, there are forty-six people under investigation, in various capacities, for the crimes of torture, abuse of authority, ideological falsehood and slander. The order of the Judge for Preliminary Investigations of Trapani was carried out by a large operation coordinated by the Central Investigative Unit of the Penitentiary Police.
