During the night, in Orta di Atella, a sudden sinkhole opened on Via Diaz, just steps from homes, nearly causing tragedy. The subsidence, likely caused by water seepage, ripped open the street for several meters, creating a deep chasm that compromised the stability of the surrounding buildings.

The collapse affected the front of a building, forcing the evacuation of three families, a total of seven people. As a precaution, four other families living nearby were evacuated. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported, a near miracle given the extent of the damage.

The commander of the municipal police, Amedeo Morrone, the head of the municipal technical office, Vito Buonuomo, and the surveyor Giulio Mascolo, accompanied by the mayor Antonio Santillo, the councilor Pasquale Pellino, the councilor Nicola Margarita and the president of the city council Massaro, promptly responded to the scene.

Also present were the Carabinieri from the Gricignano station, led by Marshal Angelo Castaldo.

Safety operations began immediately: the road was cordoned off and closed to traffic, while Acquedotti Scpa technicians blocked the pipes to stem a water leak identified near the sinkhole. Further technical investigations are pending to determine the precise cause of the disaster.

The Municipality has activated the Municipal Operations Center (COC) and is in contact with the regional Civil Protection and the Prefecture to ensure support for displaced families. Among the options being evaluated, the setting up of a temporary reception camp, with the aim of finding more adequate solutions for the well-being of the citizens involved.

The incident now requires a thorough investigation to clarify the dynamics and plan preventive interventions. Local authorities have reiterated the importance of regular monitoring of urban infrastructure and rapid action to avoid similar situations in the future.
