A serious episode of violence shook the prison of Salerno yesterday evening. During the operations of closing the cells, a foreign prisoner, belonging to the common section, brutally attacked a prison police officer, hitting him with violent punches to the face.
The officer was immediately rescued and transported to the hospital thanks to the intervention of a 118 ambulance.

“It is unacceptable that prison police personnel continue to suffer attacks in an already extremely complex environment. The Salerno prison is now out of control”, said Giuseppe Del Sorbo, national secretary of the USPP. The union has launched an appeal to the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) to adopt urgent measures to guarantee the safety of the operators and restore order within the Salerno institute. “Stable leadership and adequate management are needed to address this emergency”, added Del Sorbo.
The USPP also reiterated its solidarity with the injured officer and all prison police personnel, calling for immediate intervention to prevent further episodes of violence. “The safety of operators must be a top priority, and we cannot allow them to continue working in such dangerous conditions and without adequate resources.”

This is a very bad episode and I hope that a solution is found to stop the violence. The situation in prisons has become unsustainable and the agents deserve to work safely, without fear of being attacked.
