This episode adds to a series of acts of violence that have targeted the community Bengali in the Nola and Vesuvian area, generating growing concern and alarm.
The man, who worked in a restaurant in San Vitaliano, was cycling home from work when he was attacked by three people. Currently a guest of a SAI (Integration Reception System) project, which offers support to asylum seekers and refugees, the 50-year-old had already spent two years in captivity in Libya before arriving in Italy.
According to his testimony, on the evening of the attack he was approached and immediately beaten, and then left on the ground. Rescued by some passers-by, he was initially transported to the hospital in Nola and then transferred to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, where he awaits surgery. Doctors reported that he was only a few centimeters short of being hit in the eye.
Sunday demonstration organized by Rete Vesuviana Solidale
Faced with this escalation of violence, the “Rete Vesuviana Solidale”, which brings together the associations YaBasta, Nova Koiné and Casa della Solidarietà Sabino Romano, has organized a demonstration of solidarity and awareness for Sunday 22nd in Piazzetta San Martino a Scisciano, the site of the attack, starting at 15:30 pm. The goal is to create a space for constructive discussion to “imagine a different and better future together”, as stated by the volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Carabinieri, coordinated by the Nola Prosecutor's Office, are on the trail of the racist gang since Scisciano is not an isolated case. The military are scanning the images from public and private cameras in the area and are interviewing some witnesses. But the wall of silence is hard to break.

It is worrying what is happening in Scisciano and other areas. Violence against people seeking a better life must not be tolerated. I hope the authorities will do more to protect everyone.
