In the splendid hilly setting of a packed Villa Domi, the now customary ritual of greetings and Christmas wishes was celebrated between Prof. Angelo Montemarano, former regional health councilor and general director of the ASL of Naples, and his usual friends and colleagues.
This year, however, there is something new: a moment of shared reflection on the 30 years of ASL in Campania, a moment that culminated in the delivery, by Montemarano, of recognition plaques to those who in the past have been its collaborators and have then held and still hold leading roles in Campania's healthcare.
Among those present were also the current DG of the ASL of Benevento Gennaro Volpe, the DG of the ASL Napoli 3Sud Peppe Russo, the current extraordinary commissioner of the Pascale Maurizio di Mauro. A plaque of recognition to two managers who work outside the region: Ernesto Esposito, former DG Napoli 1 and today government sub-commissioner in Calabria and Enzo Caputo, DG Istituto Zooprofilattico of Marche and Umbria.
Among others, a plaque was also delivered to the former President of the V Health Commission of the Campania Regional Council, Hon. Angelo Giusto, as well as to the current president, Hon. Vincenzo Alaia.
“An evening full of memories and emotions – stated Angelo Montemarano – which requires us to always do better for the future. Moments like this also serve to defeat two evils that grip our present: oblivion and indifference. Those who deal with public health have the duty to remember the good that those who came before us have done and above all to commit themselves every day to defending the most fragile who are often the object of indifference”.
Among the most touching memories is the one that the former regional councilor dedicated to Costantino Mazzeo, the first General Director of ASL Napoli 1 back in 1995.

The Christmas event held at Villa Domi seems to have been very meaningful for all participants. It is important to remember the past of healthcare in Campania and reflect on the future. We hope that this initiative can lead to improvements.
