Colombian police said they had arrested one of the key leaders of the Venezuelan transnational criminal group known as Tren de Aragua. Carlos Gómez, identified as the group’s head of operations in Chile and the subject of numerous arrest warrants in that country, was detained.
The police operation
The arrest took place in Los Patios, in the department of Norte de Santander, located in eastern Colombia. Gómez had reportedly been hiding in that area for months to escape the authorities.

The operation, considered a success by authorities, was commented on social media by Presidents Gustavo Petro and Gabriel Boric. Petro shared a video of the capture, highlighting the contribution of the Chilean and Colombian intelligence services in carrying out the operation. Boric emphasized the importance of the joint effort between Chile and Colombia, calling it a decisive blow to organized crime.
Origin and activities of the group
The Tren de Aragua criminal group has been active for about ten years, originating in the Tocorón prison in the state of Aragua, Venezuela. Over time, it has expanded its operations to include countries such as Colombia, Peru, Chile, and the United States, engaging in illicit activities ranging from extortion to contract killings, drug trafficking, prostitution, human trafficking, and illegal mining.
