Avellino. This time, appeals for caution from the elderly have helped prevent yet another scam. In Venticano, in the province of Avellino, Carabinieri from the Dentecane station and those from the Mirabella Eclano mobile radio unit arrested a 54-year-old Neapolitan man for a scam committed against an elderly person.
This is the modus operandi: a phone call reaches the elderly man's home and the person on the other end, pretending to be a policeman, convinces the unfortunate man that his son has been arrested for having caused a very serious accident. Immediate release is then offered in exchange for money and valuables to be delivered to a colleague who will collect them from his home.
The victim, a man in his eighties from a small town in Irpinia, after receiving a request for 18 thousand euros, to be delivered by also collecting the valuables present in the house, however, realised that it could be a scam and, although scared, he managed to warn a neighbour, who then alerted 112.
The officers then reached the man's home and located the messenger, who, without even leaving the car, was attempting to collect the envelope containing cash and jewelry. Upon seeing the Carabinieri, the man attempted to flee, heading toward the highway toll booth, but after a few kilometers, he was intercepted, stopped, and arrested.
